Everything Bagel Seasoning mix

I love a good old plain bagel, but I equally love an 'everything' bagel. Most of the time, an everything bagel is a mixture of sesame seeds, poppy seeds, salt, garlic flakes and onion flakes, but sometimes other spices will be added.

This is my take on The Everything Bagel mix. It makes enough for probably 30-50 bagels, depending on how thick you like to apply it - so feel free to halve or quarter it if you want to.

It keeps very well in a snap lock bag and has a variety of other uses too - see below for some hints!

How to use everything bagel mix?

This spice mix is designed to be used when making bagels (hence its name!) but it can also be used in a variety of other ways:

  • On top of poached or scrambled eggs.
  • On top of smashed or sliced avocado toast.
  • Roasted or steamed vegetables.
  • Popcorn.
  • As a garnish for dips or spreads.
  • On top of grilled meats - sprinkle it over before serving.
  • Grind and use with bagel crisps.

Everything bagel mix ingredients

I use equal quantities (by weight) of the following spices:

  • Garlic granules and Onion granules - don't use onion or garlic powder; get the dried granules.
  • Black and regular sesame seeds. Don't use nigella/black cumin seeds - they look similar to black sesame seeds but taste very different.
  • Flaky salt - I like the texture of this but use another coarse salt if you prefer.

I use 2/3 by weight of poppy seeds to the above spices. This means that for 30g of the above ingredients, I would use 20g of poppy seeds.

How to make everything bagel mix?

It's pretty easy... put everything together in a bowl and stir!

Tips

  • Don't confuse nigella/black cumin seeds - they look like black sesame but taste very different.
  • Play with the amount of poppy seeds; I use less poppy seeds by weight than the other seeds.
  • If you're on a low sodium diet reduce the salt or remove it entirely.

How many bagels will this cover?

Somewhere between 30-50 depending on how much you use and whether you do just the top or the bottom as well.

How can I store the leftovers?

The leftovers store well - store them in a snap lock bag or airtight container.
